Acne-prone skin tends to be very sensitive.
There are many ways to make it angrier/more inflamed, which will lead to more breakouts/inflammation that will cause more damage in the long-term.
Read below to see how you can calm/soothe to prevent further irritation.
1 – Hydrate
Hydration is key when it comes to acne-prone skin.
Dehydration can lead to inflammation, which in turn disrupts the skin barrier. An impaired skin barrier is not able to perform it’s primary function – protection against external aggressors.
Always opt for products containing moisture replenishing ingredients such as ceramides, peptides, humectant etc.
2 – Wear SPF
Regular SPF application and reapplication.
SPF provides protection against harmful rays that leads to inflammation.
Inflammation causes more breakouts, irritation and redness.
3 – Reduce the use of actives/harsh exfoliants
Harsh exfoliants, physical abrasives & multiple actives within your routine will only lead to more irritation.
Don’t over-exfoliate. Use a gentle chemical exfoliant a couple of times per week.
If you experience any irritation, discontinue use of the product.
4 – Keep objects in contact with skin, clean
Wash regularly any object that comes in close contact with your skin. Such as –
- Makeup brushes
- Pillowcase
- Headbands, Hair scarfs etc.
5 – Do not pick!
It’s super tempting to pick at your spots. Don’t do this.
Picking your spots makes it more inflamed. This can lead to scarring an/or pigmentation, and also increase recovery time.
6 – Be patient
As always, be patient. Consistency is key.
Stay the course, stick to your routine.
The more inconsistent you are – swapping out products, trying new things; the less likely you are to see results.
The more you throw at it, the worse it’ll get.
